Request Catering
Why this question comes up
A recent Ottawa wedding-planning discussion captured a very common problem: couples want a meaningful meal, often for a larger guest count, but venue packages can push the budget up quickly when in-house catering is mandatory.
Outside-catering venues can give you more control over cuisine, cultural food requirements, buffet style, halal or vegetarian menus, late-night snacks and overall spend. The tradeoff is that you usually need to manage more details yourself, including rentals, staffing, kitchen access, insurance, setup, cleanup and bar rules.
Use this as a starting shortlist, not a final booking decision. Venue rules change, and some spaces allow outside catering only with licensed caterers, insurance documents, permits, preferred-vendor approval or specific service conditions.
Large flexible city spaces

Horticulture Building at Lansdowne Park is one of the bigger City of Ottawa options. The City lists outside catering allowed, a maximum capacity of 800, tables and chairs, portable stage access and a 6,300-square-foot main hall. It is worth asking about parking arrangements, load-in timing and whether your caterer can use the staging area the way they need to.
Scotton Hall at Glebe Community Centre is another strong candidate for weddings and community-style receptions. The City lists outside catering allowed, alcohol permit available, a maximum capacity of 400, tables, chairs, microphone, portable screen, sound system, refrigerator and sink.
Main Hall at Ron Kolbus Lakeside Centre can suit lake-view receptions or community events. The City lists outside catering allowed, a maximum capacity of 300, tables, chairs, sound system, permanent stage and commercial kitchen amenities including refrigerator, stove and microwave.
Hall A/B at R.J. Kennedy Community Centre and Arena in Cumberland is useful for east-end or rural-edge events. The City lists outside catering allowed, alcohol permit available, divider wall, tables and chairs, with a maximum capacity of 300.
Historic and outdoor-leaning options

Billings Estate National Historic Site can work for tented or garden-style events close to central Ottawa. The City lists outside catering allowed, alcohol permit available, a maximum capacity of 300, tables and chairs, plus commercial kitchen amenities.
Pinhey's Point Historic Site offers waterfront grounds in Dunrobin. The City lists outside catering allowed and a maximum capacity of 300, but also notes there is no kitchen facility or interior rental space and clients are responsible for potable water for consumption and catering needs. That makes caterer logistics especially important.
The Ottawa Rowing Club's Andy Binda Boathouse says couples can choose their own caterer and can stock their own bar with a Special Occasion Permit. The venue notes 100 seated guests for a meal or 125 for a standing cocktail event, and seasonal availability from early May to mid-October.
The Off Grid Ark, near Ottawa on the Quebec side, is a more relaxed venue model. Its site says couples can choose their own caterer, food truck, potluck or simple grilling plan, and that catering, bar service and staffing are not included. Confirm Quebec alcohol permit requirements if serving drinks.
Independent banquet venues
Saint Elias Centre is a larger Ottawa banquet venue that explicitly says external caterers are welcome, while also offering its own in-house culinary team. Its wedding FAQ also says clients may bring outside vendors for decor, entertainment and additional audiovisual needs.
Hellenic Event Centre says it can work with a caterer of your choice or provide catering options. This can be useful when you want the feel of a managed event centre but still need menu flexibility.
For smaller productions, Midnight Hour Studios in Nepean lists outside catering allowed, outside vendors allowed, a full kitchen, alcohol with a Special Occasion Permit, and a guest capacity of 40. It is better suited to intimate parties, workshops, showers or content-driven events than a large wedding dinner.
Smaller community-room options
If your guest count is modest, City of Ottawa community rooms can be budget-friendly. Examples listed by the City with outside catering allowed include Ellwood Hall at Jim Durrell Recreation Centre for up to 200 people, Roy G. Hobbs Community Centre upstairs for up to 100 people, McNabb Arena and Community Centre's community room for up to 60 people, and Lori Nash at Ray Friel Recreation Complex for up to 55 people.
These rooms can be practical for showers, milestone birthdays, cultural gatherings, memorials, team dinners and daytime events. For weddings, look closely at the room finish, lighting, ceiling height, parking, kitchen equipment, cleanup requirements and how much decorating is realistic.
Questions to ask before booking
Ask whether outside catering is allowed for your exact event type and date, whether the caterer must be licensed or insured, and whether the venue needs documents before approval.
Confirm kitchen access in detail: refrigeration, ovens, stove, microwave, dishwasher, sinks, prep surfaces, ice, water, garbage handling and whether the caterer can cook on site or only finish and serve.
Clarify the full cost of using your own caterer. Some venues are inexpensive on paper but require extra rentals, security, SOCAN or music fees, bar staffing, insurance, cleaning, tableware, linens, kitchen fees or overtime charges.
Map the room before you sign. Outside catering needs space for buffet lines or plating, a clean path from kitchen to dining area, access for guests with mobility needs, and a plan for cocktail hour, speeches, dancing and late-night food.
How to use this list
Start with the venues that fit your guest count and event style, then send each one the same short note: date, approximate guest count, catering style, cuisine needs, alcohol plans, setup requirements and whether you already have a caterer in mind.
Once the venue confirms the rules, share the venue details with your caterer before you compare quotes. A caterer can price more accurately when they know the kitchen limitations, delivery path, staffing needs and cleanup expectations.
FAQ
Not always. They can reduce menu-package pressure, but extra rentals, staffing, bar service, insurance, delivery, kitchen limits and cleanup can change the total.
